GAIT & BALANCE TRAINING
There are a variety of different reasons for loss of balance or a disturbance of gait. In order to execute a normal gait pattern, you need adequate strength, range of motion, sensation, coordination, and balance. In addition, you must also have the ability to adapt to various environments such as uneven surfaces, decreased vision, or obstacles. Balance training consists of exercises with the goal of restoring the ability to maintain your center of gravity over the base of support, whether the base of support is narrow or broad. Gait training often consists of specific cues given by the therapist to help the patient correct their walking pattern or learn to use an assistive device such as a cane or walker with an optimal pattern. Many patients progress to where they no longer need an assistive device and can walk independently without difficulty.
